Auditions for “The Bill and Peggy Hunt Playwrights Festival

Burien Little Theatre announces auditions for four plays in the 2009 Bill & Peggy Hunt Playwrights Festival!  These plays are brand-new and have never been produced elsewhere.  Each play will be part of a double-bill.

There are 19 roles ranging in age from 12 through the 50s, including two that are specifically African-American. 

The festival runs May 1-24, 2009 at Burien Little Theatre in Burien. 

Performances are Friday and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m.

Auditions are Monday, March 16 and Wednesday, March 18 from 7 to 10 p.m.

Come prepared to perform a short comedic monologue and a short dramatic monologue.  Please also bring resume and headshot.  Stipend of $35 provided.

Auditions and callbacks will be in Room 11 at the Burien Community Center, located at the intersection of S.W. 146th St. and 4th Ave. S.W. in Burien. Directions.

“If Spiders Made Honey”

A full-length play written by Dave Tucker.

Performances May 1-10, 2009.

Synopsis:  A Southern-based magazine bestows awards on new books that promote or inspire people of color. However, their latest choice turns out to be a surprise, creating an ethical dilemma. Lessons are learned, most of all that things aren't always what they seem.

Two story lines intertwine in the show:  events at the magazine and the experience of a young man with cancer who wants to contact an online friend with the same problems.  Drama with comic moments.

Derek:  Male, age 23, African-American
Camille:  Female, age 25-35, African-American, Derek’s sister
Judy:  Female, age 25-35, Camille’s associate and friend
RJ:  Male, age 35+, Camille’s boss
Paul:  Male, age 40+, writer, speaks in a South African accent
Deborah (can double with Lucy):  Female, age 30+, nurse       
Lucy (can double with Deborah):  Female, age 25+, radio talk show host
Chuck (can double with Andy):  Male, age 25+, radio talk show host
Andy (can double with Chuck): Male, age 25+, newspaper reporter
Shelby (also plays Brenda):  Female, early 20s, receptionist, has a slight Southern accent

“The Reprieve”

A one-act play written by Judith A. Jacobs.

Performances May 1-10, 2009.

Synopsis:  While waiting for the report on her melanoma surgery, a woman calls upon her sisters for emotional support—with unexpected results.  Seriocomic.

Character list:

Trudy:  Female, age 40s to 50s, a basically positive woman on the healing track, hides her fear well
Lee:  Female, Trudy’s older sister by three years, a self-help junkie who loves fixing other people
Jo:  Female, Trudy’s younger sister by seven years; organized, efficient, a bit self righteous, means well


“Man Defeats Nature”

A full-length play written by Christopher Bailey

Performances May 15-24, 2009.

Synopsis:  The  mountain erupted one year ago, and a young man is still missing.  His wife needs to move on, his mother is torn between hope and reality, and his father searches daily for his “lost” son.  Drama.

Character list:

Kay:  Female, early 50s, mother of the missing Tim
Wayne:  Male, early 50s, father of the missing Tim
Carl:  Male, early 40s, a reporter engaged to Amber
Amber:  Female, mid- to late 20s, wife of Kay and Wayne’s missing son


“Famous Last Words”

A one-act play written by Michael Wallace

Performances May 15-24, 2009.

Synopsis: Meeting in a graveyard, Byron and Memry share their trials as two young teens pursued by school bullies.  Amid their growing friendship they discover they may have lost more than just their self esteem.

Character list:

Memry:  Female, age 13 or 14, bookish, like an Edward Gorey drawing

Byron:  Male, age 12 or 13, bullied
